European Communities Trade Mark Association
The so-called (ECTA) by itself is an association, dealing mainly with the trademarks in the EU and all related aspects. Roughly the structure of ECTA is composed by different Committees and together with the Management Committee they represent the heart of the association. One of the main principles for governing includes representation by a member from each Member State in each committee.
The Association has achieved the status of a recognized expert spokesman on all questions related to the protection of trade marks in Europe, usage of trade marks in Europe, designs and domain names and related rights, such as copyrights or unfair competition. ECTA does also take into consideration all questions arising from the new framework affecting the conditions of the usage of trade marks in the EU, including the globalization of markets, the explosion of the Internet and the changes in the world economy.
The European Communities Trade Mark Association is also taking into consideration what is happening nowadays. On 8 December 2016, the association held a workshop in Riga, Latvia, addressing the Trademark Directive and the implications for the subsequent usage of the trade marks in EU after Brexit. In the workshop were discussed topics as implementation of Trade Marks Directive in Baltic States, the relevant instruments in the substantive and procedural law when it comes to the protection of trade marks in Europe, the implications of the Brexit and others.
